Winter Hair Care For You, Babe

Here in my beautiful hometown of Sarnia, Ontario we are blessed with relatively mild winters, minus a few frigid cold spells and about three decent snowfalls. Being a lake town, we have very damp climates in the winter months and aside from the winter blues, it can cause a symphony of issues to our bodies.

I have a love hate relationship with the beautiful season of winter. As someone with pre-existing skin issues, flare ups are common when we go below zero degrees. My skin decides to retain absolutely none of its moisture, resulting in dry cracked skin on my face and hands and you guessed it, my scalp. About eighty percent of my clientele have expressed this very issue and I want you to know, I feel you! So, I have put together a few of my must have items to get us feeling confident and relieve the crispy winter scalps (ew, worst mental picture but it is so true). Whether you are experiencing dryness seasonally or you are a 365er like me, this product guide is sure to provide you with some relief.

Let's start at the source, the scalp.

Some common reasons we get dry irritated scalps are;

-       Seasonal changes and cold temperatures

-       Hair products… yeah, I said it, we will dive deep into this.

-       Too much washing

-       Stress

-       Hormones

-       Unbalanced Ph

-       Eczema, Psoriasis, etc

These are just a few reasons you could be experiencing symptoms of dry scalp. We know that the seasons affect our skin, but did you know that the products you use on your hair, skin, and scalp could be causing this too? Many products out there claim to be sulfate and paraben free and it is very important to choose the right product that is transparent about their ingredients. Sulfates are the cleansing or foaming agents in detergents and washes. Harsh Sulfates and SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate/sodium laureth sulfate) can essentially over cleanse and dry out your skin. Plant derived cleansers are a much gentler option and cleanse away dirt and oil, all while leaving our skin much more balanced allowing the moisture barrier to stay intact.

I always recommend talking to your dermatologist or doctor about any issues with your hair and scalp as it could be hormonal or a form of mild eczema or psoriasis (like me).

Now into the fun stuff, these KEVIN.MURPHY products are my tried-and-true winter warriors! All of the products have worked wonders for me and are gentle enough to use on my scalp psoriasis to alleviate the itching and buildup.

Up First! SCALP.SPA

SCALP.SPA is one of Kevin's newest launches and let me tell you, he has answered my every wish with this product. SCALP.SPA is a two-part system packed with skin loving ingredients that will help nurture your scalp back to health. The system uses micelles (commonly used in skincare products) to attach and dissolve impurities (dirt and excess oils) without stripping the skin. The system unclogs, soothes, tones, and cleanses all at the same time.

How does it work?

SCALP.SPA SCRUB gently exfoliates the scalp using an ingredient called perlite, a volcanic rock tooled into a sphere all while protecting the scalp and hairs integrity.

SCALP.SPA WASH is a soothing post-scrub solution specially formulated with micellar water and celery seed extract to sooth and purify, leaving the hair feeling clean and moisturized.

This system is gentle enough for daily washers or if you are a once-a-week kind of lady like me, it is great for removing buildup and dry skin before washing with what you need.

Which brings me to my next super hero! BALANCING.WASH. I have been using balancing wash for close to five years now and it was a total life saver for me. This super lathery cleanser is packed full of nourishing ingredients like wheat amino acids to deeply moisturize and boost softness and shine. Totally gentle and an amazing balancer, AND this wash is totally safe for coloured hair!

Last but not least HYDRATE.ME WASH, RINSE, and TREATMENT. Not only does this little family have one of my favourite scents, it is also loaded with nourishing and hydrating ingredients like the Kakadu Plum (high in vitamin c to lock in moisture and smooth the surface of the hair), Jojoba Easters (helps to smooth and detangle, preventing damage), and Evening Primrose oil (loaded with omega-6 and other moisture attracting elements).

We can’t forget about our ends, so try adding UNTANGLED to detangle, restore, strengthen, and retain moisture in the hair.

Now that we are feeling full of knowledge and hydration, what products do you use to soothe your winter flakes?
